February is Heart Month

About every 25 seconds, an American will have a "coronary event".
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and is a major cause of disability. The most common heart disease in the United States is coronary heart disease, which often appears as a heart attack. In 2009, an estimated 785,000 Americans had a new coronary attack, and about 470,000 will have a recurrent attack. About every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary event, and about one every minute will die from one.1
The chance of developing coronary heart disease can be reduced by taking steps to prevent and control factors that put people at greater risk. Additionally, knowing the signs and symptoms of heart attack are crucial to the most positive outcomes after having a heart attack. People who have survived a heart attack can also work to reduce their risk of another heart attack or a stroke in the future.
Diseases and Conditions That Put Your Heart at Risk
Other conditions that affect your heart or increase your risk of death or disability include arrhythmia, heart failure, and peripheral artery disease (PAD). High cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, tobacco use, and secondhand smoke are also risk factors associated with heart disease.
Know Your Signs and Symptoms
Some heart attacks are sudden and intense; however, most heart attacks start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Often people affected aren't sure what's wrong and wait too long before getting help. Here are signs that can mean a heart attack is happening:
Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain.

Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach.

Shortness of breath. May occur with or without chest discomfort.

Other signs. These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness.
The American Heart Association, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the American Red Cross, and the National Council on Aging have launched a new "Act in Time" campaign to increase people's awareness of heart attack and the importance of calling 9-1-1 immediately at the onset of heart attack symptoms.

In next week's HEALTH TIP we will offer information about secondhand smoke and provide some basic 'health tips for your heart'.

VitaMist's
Daily Health Task

Without our health, we have nothing. VitaMist's mission is to constantly work to help people achieve better health. In this weeks "Health Tip" we are suggesting a few simple tasks that you can do every day that can help improve your health. Just like brushing your teeth, healthy habits should be cultivated on a daily basis.

Remember:
"Health lies in labor, and there is no royal road to it but through toil." -Wendell Phillips

1. Activity should be a daily occurrence. Walk, run or jump for a minimum total of 20 minutes a day.
2. Protect your skin. Sun block should be applied on face, neck, arms and hands even in the dead of winter. It protects against climatic toxins too. Moisturize your skin daily.
3. Eat fruits, vegetables, grains, low-fat dairy products and small amounts of protein. Avoid sweets and other processed foods.
4. Meditate or spend a minimum of five minutes daily in quiet time.
5. Find your spiritual self. Discover what inspires you, raises your level of consciousness, motivates you, and satisfies your soul.
6. Exercise your brain. Read, study, solve problems, and learn new skills. As does the body, the brain atrophies with lack of use.
7. Take your vitamins and SPRAY SOMEBODY.

Flu PreCaution Pak

More and more we have been hearing about the occurrence of human cases of swine flu. At this time, the outbreaks are appearing more and more throughout the U.S. Cases of swine flu A (H1N1) virus infection have now been identified in several states in the United States.

President Obama has declared the Smine Flu a National Emergency in the U.S. The declaration that Obama signed late Friday authorized Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to bypass federal rules so health officials can respond more quickly to the outbreak, which has killed more than 1,000 people in the United States.

Here at VitaMist we are keeping an eye on this developing situation. It is critical that people do not panic. However, there are some basic measures that we feel everyone should take.

As you may know VitaMist has put together the "Flu Precaution Pack" - the VitaMist FPP. This is a selection of four VitaMist Spray Vitamins that may help boost your immune reserves. If you have a strong and healthy immune system, your chances of effectively fighting attack by the swine flu virus may be significantly improved.

The VitaMist FPP is:

Multiple

Echinacea+G

C+Zinc
Vitamin D

Until this emergency is over, we are making this pack available at the special price of $74.91 (Retail); and $47.88 (Distributor) price.

What we need to look for in supplements

What are we looking for in a supplement?
There are 3 things.
1. The combination of what you are taking. Is it in the proper proportion to what your body needs or is it a mega dose? Remember, the Centenarians take their nutrition in small doses.

2. When do you take your nutrition? Is it once a day? The longest living people take it throughout the whole day.

3. Last, but most important, are you giving your body the chance to absorb its nutrition? Most delivery methods for nutrition give you less than 10% absorption.

How to Evaluate Vitamins and Supplements

Everyone needs a balance of essential nutrients from a variety of foods to stay healthy. Yet it's not always easy to eat right when you're on the go. That's why some of us reach for vitamins and supplements to fill in the gaps.

Yet, with a plethora of multivitamins, herbs, and botanicals out there, how can you tell if a supplement is safe -- or right for you?

Although there's contradictory evidence as to whether a daily multivitamin staves off disease, many people add them to their diet to maintain or boost health. Others, such as premenopausal women, sometimes choose individual vitamins, like iron, to fill in specific gaps.

If you're evaluating supplements and vitamins to add to your diet, here are nine questions to ask your doctor, pharmacist, and/or registered dietitian:

What health benefits does this supplement offer me?
Do I need this supplement for my health?
What is the recommended dose for this supplement?
When and for how long do I need to take this supplement?
Which is most appropriate and effective for me -- a pill, powder, or liquid?
Does this supplement or vitamin have any known side effects?
What are the best brands of this supplement?
Does this supplement interact with any medications or foods?
Will I need to stop taking this supplement or vitamin if I have to undergo surgery?

Which Vitamin Form Should You Choose?

Once you know which vitamin or supplement is right for you, you'll discover many can be bought as pills, liquids, or powders. Typically the difference between them is the rate at which your body absorbs the supplement and how quickly the supplement becomes active. For example, liquids are absorbed faster than pills.

Certain supplements are in pill form because they become ineffective, or even dangerous, if exposed to stomach acids. Some people need to take a liquid if they have difficulty absorbing vitamins or supplements from a pill.

And not all formulations of a particular vitamin are the same. For example, vitamin D supplements come as either vitamin D-2 (ergocalciferol) or vitamin D-3 (cholecalciferol), with vitamin D-3 tending to be the more active form. When in doubt, talk with your doctor about which supplement suits your needs.

Water Therapy

"Water Therapy"

Drink at least eight 8 oz. glasses of water a day.

Thoreau said that water is the drink of the wise man. Water is fundamental to all life on earth. Our bodies are made up of 70% water. It is involved in every function in the body, including circulation, digestion, absorption of nutrients and the transmission of electrical currents in the body which control our nerves, muscles and hormones. Due to its importance in proper elimination and detoxification, I'm fond of saying "The solution to pollution is dilution," as water facilitates the elimination of waste products through urination, sweating, defecation, tears and mucus which line our respiratory and digestive tracts.

While we get water in many foods we eat and beverages we drink, pure water is often the best form to ingest. A recent study surveyed peoples' various aches and pains, energy levels and sense of well-being. When they were instructed to drink 8 glasses of water a day and their symptoms were reevaluated, notable improvements were seen in improved energy levels, fewer aches and pains, and generally improved sense of health. Adequate water is an extremely inexpensive and efficacious health practice.

Water quality is very important. In many areas of the country, tap water may contain lead, radon, nitrates and other potentially toxic chemicals. Additionally chlorine and chloramines are placed in municipal water to decontaminate it. Recently, San Francisco changed from using chlorine to using chloramine. Flouride in water supplies is a controversial topic with some studies suggesting health risks associated with fluoridation.

For these reasons, I recommend using clean sources of water and the use of solid carbon filters. Avoid water that is in soft plastic containers, particularly in hot climates, as these can leach plastics into the water. Nalgene bottles are a good type for storing and transporting filtered water.
It is becoming fashionable to drink water immediately after waking up every morning. This "water therapy" is being credited with helping the following:
Body Ache
Headache
Heart Health
Arthritis
Epilepsy
Obesity
Bronchitis
Asthma
TB
Kidney and Urinary tract diseases
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Diabetes
Constipation
Sight problems
Menstrual Disorders
But it is essential to have clean and pure water, just like the purified water that goes into each and every tube of VitaMist Spray Vitamins.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D

Seniors who take between 700 and 1,000 international units (IU) of supplemental vitamin D3 per day reduce their risk of falling by up to 26 percent, according to a new study published in the Oct. 2 edition of the British Medical Journal.

Researchers reviewed the findings of eight fall prevention studies involving participants aged 65 and older and found the beneficial effect was significant within two to five months of starting treatment, extended beyond 12 months, and was independent of age, type of dwelling or additional calcium supplementation, the researchers noted.

Supplemental vitamin D doses of less than 700 IU per day didn't reduce falls, wrote Dr. Heike A. Bischoff-Ferrari, director of the Center on Aging and Mobility at University Hospital Zurich.
